FAA briefly restricts some LAX traffic during thunderstorms
The October 23 restriction lasted about 73 minutes and applied to selected aircraft; scheduled airline flights were not affected, one record shows.

The Federal Aviation Administration briefly restricted some aircraft movements at Los Angeles International Airport on the evening of October 23 because of thunderstorms, according to air traffic monitoring records. The ground stop began at 02:17 UTC on October 24 and remained listed for about 73 minutes, ATIS Alerts reported. Another monitoring service recorded a slightly different start time, so the precise timeline should be checked against the FAA advisory.
One operational record said the measure covered only selected aircraft and did not affect scheduled airline flights under that particular notice. The records do not prove a full halt of passenger arrivals or departures, and travelers should not read the airport-level disruption log as a complete tally of flight delays. Ground stops are one tool the FAA uses to hold departures headed for an airport when extra traffic management is needed, and thunderstorms triggered this one.
Even when the weather above the terminal looks calm, thunderstorms can still disrupt airport operations. Controllers may have to route aircraft around dangerous convective weather on approach or departure paths, then adjust spacing and traffic flow accordingly. The FAA can issue temporary restrictions on selected departures to keep congestion down or preserve safe spacing. Such restrictions often lift quickly when the hazard passes, but an airline's schedule may need longer to return to normal if aircraft or crews were delayed.
A separate incident in July affected American Airlines flights. On July 28, the airline said a "technology issue briefly impacted connectivity" for some systems. "Connectivity has been fully restored," the statement said, and the FAA advisory held flights not in the air during the IT outage. The ground stop lasted about 45 minutes, and flights resumed after that.
The October 23 LAX restriction is no longer active, and the records do not support a description of an ongoing airport-wide closure. An earlier October 14 LAX ground stop involved an FAA equipment outage, not thunderstorms. Passengers should check their flight status with the operating airline.
